Google has launched a new AI-powered Gmail inbox designed to deliver personalized task overviews and real-time alerts for important updates. The upgrade also introduces AI-generated summaries in search and a Grammarly-like proofreading feature. Additionally, several premium AI capabilities previously exclusive to paid users are now being rolled out to all Gmail users.
The new AI inbox tab consists of two main sections: "Suggested Actions" and "Topics to Follow." The first section highlights priority emails requiring attention, such as reminders about an upcoming bill payment or prompting you to call your dermatologist to confirm your shipping address for prescription delivery.
In the "Topics to Follow" area, users will see dynamic updates like “Your Lululemon return is being processed” or “Your Metal Vent Tech T-shirt has been delivered,” along with financial notifications such as “Your year-end statement is now available from Wealthfront.” These updates are automatically grouped into categories including “Finance” and “Purchases.”
"This is how we’re proactively supporting you in Gmail—showing you what needs to be done and when," said Blake Barnes, Google’s Vice President of Product, during a press briefing. "Don’t worry—the classic inbox is still there. This is just another view you can switch to at any time to cut through the noise of incoming messages."
The AI inbox is currently being released to trusted testers, with broader availability expected in the coming months.
Gmail’s new AI-powered search summaries allow users to ask natural language questions and instantly receive concise answers pulled directly from their email history—eliminating the need for keyword-based searches or manually opening multiple messages.
For example, asking “Who gave me a quote for my bathroom renovation last year?” will trigger an AI summary that extracts the relevant contact details from past correspondence and highlights key information.
"We scan every message in your inbox and surface the answer right at the top," Barnes explained. "Just like AI Overviews in Google Search, you can ask natural language queries and get AI-driven responses. But in Gmail, the model relies solely on your own emails—your personal memory bank—to generate replies."
This feature is currently rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Google emphasized that all AI features in Gmail are optional, stating that personal content is not used to train underlying models and that user data is processed within strictly isolated environments.
The new Proofread tool analyzes draft emails to help refine writing by improving clarity, structure, and tone. It offers one-click suggestions covering word choice, conciseness, active voice, and splitting complex sentences.
For instance, if you type “may cause disruption,” Gmail might suggest a more precise alternative. It also detects incorrect word usage—such as “weather” instead of “whether”—providing corrections similar to those offered by popular tools like Grammarly.
By introducing its own built-in editing assistant, Google aims to reduce reliance on third-party services and discourage users from copying drafts into external AI tools like ChatGPT for refinement.
The Proofread feature is currently available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
While some advanced features remain limited to select users, Google announced that "Help Me Write," AI summaries for long email threads, and "Suggested Replies" are now expanding to all Gmail users—previously restricted to paid plans.
"Help Me Write" enables users to generate full email drafts from a simple prompt. AI summaries condense lengthy conversation threads into clear overviews, while Suggested Replies leverage context and personal tone to offer relevant, style-matched response options.
