BleepingComputer reported on December 25 that OpenAI has quietly rolled out a new feature called "Formatting Blocks" to enhance the ChatGPT user interface (UI) layout, enabling dynamic content adaptation based on the current task type.
Prior to this update, when users composed emails or blog posts using ChatGPT, the output was displayed only in the standard chat response format. While this didn't affect the core capabilities of the large language model (LLM), it often led to suboptimal experiences when handling long-form content or documents requiring specific formatting.
Recognizing this limitation, OpenAI introduced an adaptive interface solution aimed at improving interaction efficiency. The key innovation treats generated content as structured "formatted documents" rather than plain text conversation logs.
When ChatGPT detects tasks such as email drafting or content writing, it automatically switches to a rich-text editing environment. This eliminates the need for users to copy responses into external editors for reformatting, allowing initial layout adjustments directly within the chat interface.
To enable this functionality, ChatGPT now includes a dedicated "formatting box." When users highlight text within a rich-text context—such as an email draft or article preview—a compact toolbar appears with common formatting options.
This design closely mirrors familiar tools like Microsoft Word or Gmail’s editor, significantly reducing the learning curve and enabling intuitive actions such as bolding, italicizing, or adjusting text style.
The feature is currently being deployed in phases and may not be immediately visible to all users. OpenAI stated that further updates will expand support for additional document formats in the coming weeks.
