Meta Dissolves AI Lab to Advance AGI Development

2025-08-20

Meta has restructured its AI superintelligence laboratory into four distinct divisions dedicated to research, infrastructure optimization, and product development as part of a comprehensive strategy to advance superintelligent technologies.

Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang outlined in an internal memo that the superintelligence lab will be divided into specialized units covering AI research, infrastructure, hardware development, product integration, and the company's long-term superintelligence objectives.

"Superintelligence is on the horizon, and to take it seriously we need to organize around critical domains essential for achieving this goal," Wang stated in an article first reported by Bloomberg.

Meta confirmed the reorganization to Decrypt via email but declined to provide further details.

The restructured Meta Superintelligence Lab (MSL) will comprise four teams:

  • TBD Lab under Wang's leadership
  • FAIR (Fundamental AI Research)
  • Product & Applied Research led by former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman
  • MSL Infrastructure responsible for Meta's AI infrastructure development

This reorganization follows a significant talent acquisition campaign where Meta recruited top professionals from OpenAI, Anthropic, GitHub, and Google DeepMind. In June 2025, the company invested $14 billion in Scale AI and appointed Scale's CEO Wang as new Chief AI Officer. The same month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman accused Meta of offering $10 million packages to lure his employees.

Separate New York Times reporting citing anonymous sources suggests some executives may depart post-reorganization. The report also indicates Meta is evaluating integration of third-party AI models into its products, signaling a strategic shift from previous internal development focus.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has positioned AI and its superintelligence potential as central to Meta's long-term vision. CFO Susan Li revealed in Q2 earnings calls that capital expenditures could reach $72 billion by year-end, primarily driven by AI infrastructure investments.

Recently, Zuckerberg reaffirmed Meta's commitment to superintelligence development in a social media post.

"I'm extremely optimistic about how superintelligence can accelerate human progress," he wrote. "Perhaps more importantly, superintelligence has the potential to initiate a new era of individual empowerment, giving people greater autonomy to shape their own trajectories."
