Meta has confirmed it is testing a standalone app called Vibes, which was initially launched last September. The app enables users to create and share AI-generated short videos while offering a dedicated feed to explore AI videos from other users.
Think of TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every clip you see is AI-generated. Up until now, this type of feed has been housed within the Meta AI app. By making Vibes a standalone application separate from Meta AI, Meta is positioning it as a more direct competitor. Sora, OpenAI's AI-generated video and social app, went live shortly after Vibes debuted.
"Following strong early momentum for Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that progress," Meta said in an emailed statement. "We’ve seen users increasingly turning to this format to create, discover, and share AI-generated videos with friends. This independent app provides a dedicated platform for that experience, offering a more focused and immersive environment. We will continue expanding the app based on insights learned from the community."
This news was first reported by Platformer.
Meta declined to share specific figures but stated that Vibes is performing well and that usage of Meta AI has seen steady growth since its launch, suggesting a demand for a standalone application.
The tech giant also noted that while users engage with content inside Meta AI, a separate app could deliver a more focused experience for creation and interaction.
Vibes allows users to generate videos from scratch or remix clips they see in the feed. Before posting, you can add new visual effects, overlay music, and adjust styles. Videos can then be shared directly to the Vibes feed, sent privately via direct message, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Meta highlighted that collaboration and sharing are on the rise, with many Vibes videos being sent to friends—a pattern the company says mirrors how people use Reels.
It's worth noting that, in addition to testing new premium subscriptions on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, Meta will explore subscriptions for AI features, including those within Vibes.
Although Vibes has been free since launch, Meta plans to introduce a freemium model for video creation, offering a subscription option that unlocks additional video creation opportunities each month. These test subscriptions are expected to roll out in the coming months.
