CarPlay users might soon have the option to use their preferred chatbots instead of Siri. According to Bloomberg, Apple is working to enable voice control applications from platforms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google for CarPlay. Previously, users wanting to access third-party chatbots in their cars had to rely on their iPhones, but they may soon be able to converse directly with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini through CarPlay.
However, reports indicate that Apple "does not allow users to replace the Siri button or wake word on CarPlay." Consequently, users will need to manually launch their preferred chatbot application. Developers, though, can configure their apps to automatically activate voice mode upon opening, which could help streamline the user experience.
According to Bloomberg, the integration of third-party chatbots into CarPlay could be rolled out "within the next few months," although an official announcement has yet to be made. This rumored update follows Apple's announcement last month that Google Gemini will power an enhanced version of Siri, expected to be released sometime this year.
