Hugging Face Opens Orders for Reachy Mini Desktop Robot
Hugging Face has begun accepting pre-orders for its latest desktop robot product line. The AI development platform unveiled two Reachy Mini variants following a prototype showcase in May that also included the larger HopeJR humanoid model.
The company announced the launch with two distinct configurations: Reachy Mini Wireless, a wireless version priced at $449 powered by Raspberry Pi 5 hardware; and Reachy Mini Lite, a tethered option available for $299. Both open-source robotics kits require self-assembly and feature toy-sized dimensions with dual eye screens and antenna components.
Developers gain full Python programming capabilities once assembled, with preloaded demonstration projects and integration with Hugging Face Hub - the company's open-source machine learning platform hosting over 1.7 million AI models and 400,000 datasets. CEO Clém Delangue explained the dual-version strategy emerged from early user feedback, including a child's desire to move the robot freely between rooms.
"Our development approach always centers on community input, and open-source philosophy enables limitless customization," Delangue emphasized. Targeting AI developers specifically, the robots serve as tangible platforms for building and testing applications through an ecosystem where users can share their creations with the broader community.
The Lite variant will begin shipping next month while wireless models follow later this year. Delangue highlighted the company's commitment to rapid fulfillment rather than extended pre-order periods. This initiative aligns with Hugging Face's vision of democratizing robotics through open-source hardware that gives users complete control.
"Centralized robotic systems controlled by corporations represent a dystopian future," Delangue stated. "I believe in a world where individuals maintain actual understanding and control over the robotic technologies in their environments."
