According to reports, Apple is planning to introduce a brand-new AI-powered battery management system in iOS 19. This feature aims to intelligently adjust power consumption to optimize battery usage. By learning each user's habits, the system may extend battery life, though this has yet to be verified.
Battery drain has long been a major issue for Apple's latest devices. While the company claims improvements in battery life for its newest models, they still lag behind flagship products from other smartphone manufacturers. The upcoming iPhone 17, which is expected to be the first device to feature this new AI-driven battery management system, might come with a smaller battery due to its ultra-slim design. This makes smart energy-saving crucial. The AI-based approach ensures efficient operation without compromising user experience.
The report also mentions that although the feature is launching with the iPhone 17, the same advanced battery management system will be available for all iPhones compatible with iOS 19.
This move appears to follow Google’s adaptive battery feature on Android. Apple’s system will analyze user behavior to predict and manage power consumption for specific apps and functions. For instance, it may reduce background activity for rarely used apps or adjust settings during low-usage periods to conserve energy.
This marks a shift from earlier battery tools like "Optimized Battery Charging" and the "Battery Health" menu, which offered static, one-size-fits-all solutions. In contrast, the new AI system will continuously learn from individual user behaviors. Whether the device is used for intensive gaming or light messaging and calls, the iPhone will adapt in real-time to extend battery life while maintaining smooth performance.
In addition to AI-driven optimizations, iOS 19 is also rumored to include a lock screen indicator showing users the estimated time needed to fully charge their device. This enhancement provides greater transparency, helping users plan charging more effectively. These updates are expected to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2025, with a public release planned for September.
Apple’s new efforts in AI are noteworthy, but despite significant investments and ongoing initiatives, the company faces several challenges in advancing its AI plans. In 2025, internal resource constraints have caused delays in the rollout of Apple Intelligence features and the redesigned Siri. Budget cuts and reliance on outdated GPUs have further compounded these setbacks.
Moreover, the company is facing legal scrutiny over the delayed release of certain Apple Intelligence features. A federal lawsuit accuses Apple of false advertising and unfair competition, alleging that marketing campaigns misled consumers into purchasing new phones based on features that were not yet available.
