Apple is reportedly developing its own AI wearable device, according to a Wednesday report by The Information. The device is described as a pin that users can attach to their clothing, featuring two cameras and three microphones.
If this rumored device comes to market, it would signify further intensification in the AI hardware sector. This news follows comments made by Chris Lehane, OpenAI's Global Affairs Director, on Monday at Davos, where he told the audience that his company might announce its long-anticipated first AI hardware device in the latter half of this year. Other reports suggest this device could be a pair of earbuds.
Apple's device is reportedly described as "a thin, flat circular disk with a casing made of aluminum and glass." Engineers aim to make it comparable in size to an AirTag, "only slightly thicker." The pin is also said to include two cameras (one standard and one wide-angle) for photos and videos, along with a physical button, a speaker, and a charging strip similar to those found on Fitbit devices.
Apple may even be accelerating development of this product to compete with OpenAI. The report suggests the pin could launch in 2027, with an initial production run of 20 million units. TechCrunch has reached out to Apple for further comment.
However, whether consumers truly need such an AI device remains to be seen. Two former Apple employees previously founded Humane AI, a startup that also sold an AI pin. Humane's pin similarly incorporated microphones and a camera. Yet, it performed poorly post-launch, forcing the company to cease operations and sell its assets to HP within two years of the product's release.
