During Tuesday's Android Show, which served as a prelude to Google I/O, Google revealed its plan to integrate Gemini into Wear OS smartwatches and Google TV. This announcement aligns with Google’s broader strategy to replace Google Assistant across all its devices and platforms with Gemini. The news wasn’t entirely unexpected, as users have long anticipated Google bringing its AI assistant to Wear OS smartwatches and Google TV.
The tech giant stated that this expansion will allow its AI assistant to reach beyond smartphones, providing accessibility whether users are jogging or relaxing on the couch.
Wear OS smartwatch users will soon be able to access Gemini directly from their wrists. Google highlighted that this feature will be particularly helpful when using a phone is inconvenient, such as while cooking with flour-covered hands or cycling.
Google emphasized that users can communicate naturally with Gemini, eliminating the need to phrase requests precisely.
For instance, if you’ve already stowed your phone in the locker room at the gym, you can use Gemini on your smartwatch to set reminders like, "Remember, I’m using locker number 43 today." Additionally, since Gemini integrates with your apps, you can inquire about a restaurant a friend mentioned via email without interrupting your workout or reaching for your phone.
Gemini will roll out to Wear OS smartwatches in the coming months.
On Google TV, Gemini will offer personalized content suggestions, such as generating a list of kid-friendly action movies.
Gemini is also capable of answering questions. For example, children can ask the assistant about the solar system, and Gemini can pull up an educational YouTube video to deepen their understanding of various topics.
Gemini will arrive on Google TV later this year.
The company is also integrating Gemini into Android XR, its new platform for extended reality (XR) devices like headsets and smart glasses. Announced last December, Android XR will debut alongside Samsung’s Project Moohan headset, which is expected to launch sometime this year.
This integration of Gemini into Android XR isn’t surprising, as Google had previously indicated that users would be able to control headsets and inquire about viewed apps and content through Gemini.
"When the first headset launches later this year, Gemini will assist with tasks like planning your vacation by pulling videos, maps, and local tips around you, helping you create a full itinerary within minutes—a truly rich and immersive experience," said Guemmy Kim, Senior Director of Product and UX for the Android team, during a briefing with reporters.
As part of Tuesday’s announcement, Google shared that Gemini will also come to Android Auto in the coming months. This expansion will enable users to perform tasks like finding a charging station en route to the post office while passing by a park. Additionally, users can ask Gemini to summarize received messages or provide a quick news update.
