OpenAI Launches Under-$5 ChatGPT Plan in India

2025-08-19

OpenAI has launched a more affordable paid subscription plan for ChatGPT in India, introducing the ChatGPT GO tier priced at INR 399 (approximately $4.60) monthly, which is significantly cheaper than the existing Plus plan costing INR 1,999 ($23) per month.

The company recently implemented local currency pricing across all subscription tiers, and this new launch also enables UPI (Unified Payments Interface) - India's digital payment framework - as an official payment method.

According to Nick Turley, OpenAI's VP and Head of ChatGPT, the GO tier will offer 10x more message capacity, image generations and file uploads compared to the free version. Turley emphasized that the plan will also enhance memory retention capabilities to deliver more personalized interaction experiences.

"Making ChatGPT more accessible is crucial for user demand," Turley stated. "We're initially launching GO in India to learn from local feedback before expanding globally."

With local currency conversion considerations, the Plus plan had exceeded $20 for Indian users prior to this update. The new GO tier now provides a cost-effective alternative for users primarily seeking basic chat functions, image creation and file handling capabilities.

Tibor Blaho - a renowned software engineer known for accurately leaking upcoming AI product details - had previously exposed the GO plan's specifications and features.

While currently geographically restricted to India, OpenAI's support portal confirms ongoing efforts to expand this offering to other markets.

Last month, Turley revealed ChatGPT's global weekly active users have surpassed 700 million, doubling from 500 million in March. Following OpenAI's image generation upgrade in March, Indian user engagement has shown notable growth.

Data from AppFigures shows India leads in ChatGPT app downloads across platforms, with over 29 million installations in the past 90 days. However, the application generated just $3.6 million in revenue from Indian users during the same period.

This strategic pricing model could potentially drive higher consumer adoption of ChatGPT. Other AI companies are also targeting India's 850 million+ internet user base through initiatives like Perplexity's collaboration with Airtel for free Pro subscriptions, and Google's year-long free AI Pro access for Indian students.

Although OpenAI hasn't introduced any free tier benefits, the localized affordable pricing structure may result in significantly improved subscription conversion rates in the Indian market.
