According to a report by Axios, OpenAI's policy director Chris Lehane revealed at the Davos Forum on Monday that the company is "on track" to launch its first device in the second half of 2026.
Last May, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple chief designer Jony Ive disclosed that the company was developing a series of hardware products, expected to debut in 2026. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported in November last year that OpenAI was actively recruiting talent from Apple's hardware engineering team.
It is reported that the mysterious AI hardware they are co-developing already has its first prototype. Altman described the prototype's performance as "astonishing," stated that the project is progressing as planned, and revealed that the product will enter production within two years.
During the event, the two elaborated on the device's core concept: to fundamentally change how people interact with computers. They believe that current smart devices are like "walking through Times Square in New York," filled with distractions and unable to provide a sense of calm. Therefore, this new device aims to create a serene experience akin to "sitting in a lakeside cabin," allowing users to focus on what truly matters.
