Google Adds "Automatic Browsing" to Chrome, Powered by Gemini AI

Google is rolling out a new "Auto Browse" feature in Chrome that can perform multi-step tasks on your behalf. Powered by Gemini AI, this functionality is set to launch in the US for Google AI Pro and Ultra users, enabling capabilities like hotel and flight cost inquiries, booking appointments, filling out online forms, and managing subscriptions.

This update signifies another expansion for Gemini in Chrome, which initially debuted as an AI assistant for asking questions or summarizing web page content. Google subsequently added features allowing Gemini to compare products across multiple tabs and retrieve pages from browsing history, while also hinting at enabling AI agents to handle "tedious tasks."

Google states that when using Auto Browse, Gemini can identify decorative items in photos you are viewing, find similar products online, add them to a shopping cart, apply discount codes, and stay within a set budget. If a task requires logging into an account, Gemini can also utilize the browser's password manager to sign in.

Concurrently, Google has relocated Gemini in Chrome from a pop-up window to a panel on the right side of the screen. It now supports integrations for all users with Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Google Shopping, and Google Flights. This allows Gemini to reference information from the apps you use and perform actions within those applications.

Google writes: "For example, if you need to book a flight to attend a meeting, Gemini can dig up that old email containing event details, reference context from Google Flights to provide suggestions, and then draft an email notifying colleagues of your arrival time."

You will also find Nano Banana in the new Gemini Chrome panel—Google's AI-powered image generator. This feature will be available to all Gemini Chrome users, allowing you to edit images within the window using text prompts.

Google has more in store for Gemini in Chrome in the future, as it competes with other agentic AI browsers, including OpenAI's Atlas and Perplexity's Comet. Personal Intelligence is an opt-in feature, initially launched in the Gemini app, which enables Gemini to review your past conversations and utilize reasoning capabilities to analyze data related to your Gmail, Calendar, Photos, and search history. Google states it plans to introduce this feature to Chrome in the "coming months."
