According to Bloomberg, Windsurf, the creator of a popular AI coding assistant editor, is in talks with OpenAI for a potential acquisition valued at approximately $3 billion.
If the deal goes through, OpenAI would directly compete with several AI coding assistant providers, including Anysphere, the company behind Cursor. Notably, OpenAI has supported Cursor through its startup fund.
A person familiar with Cursor's shareholder structure mentioned that this acquisition could impact the credibility of OpenAI’s startup fund, given its significant investment in Cursor. It remains unclear whether OpenAI ever approached Cursor for acquisition negotiations.
Beyond Bloomberg's sources, there are additional signs suggesting possible interactions between the two companies. Recently, Windsurf users received an email notifying them of an upcoming announcement later in the week, offering the option to secure continued access to the coding editor for $10 per month.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, also shared a video yesterday highlighting Windsurf’s capabilities.
As reported by TechCrunch in February, Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, was in discussions to raise new funding at a valuation of $2.85 billion, led by Kleiner Perkins. According to reports, the company generates approximately $40 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), significantly lower than Cursor, which reportedly achieves $200 million in ARR. Cursor has been in talks to raise funds at a valuation of around $10 billion, as Bloomberg reported last month.
According to PitchBook, since its founding in 2021 by Varun Mohan and his childhood friend Douglas Chen, a MIT graduate, Windsurf has raised $243 million from investors such as Greenoaks Capital and General Catalyst.
