Elon Musk's companies, SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla, are reportedly exploring a potential merger. According to reports from Bloomberg and Reuters, while discussions appear to be in early stages, they could ultimately result in at least one company being absorbed into SpaceX.
Two scenarios are currently under consideration. One involves a merger between SpaceX and Tesla, as reported by Bloomberg citing unnamed insiders. The other scenario is a merger between SpaceX and xAI, which already owns Musk's social media platform, X.
Reuters reports that a SpaceX-xAI merger could occur before SpaceX's planned initial public offering (IPO) later this year. This would consolidate products like the Grok chatbot, the X platform, Starlink satellites, and SpaceX rockets under a single corporate umbrella.
Representatives for SpaceX and xAI have not publicly commented on this possibility. However, recent filings show that two new corporate entities, named K2 Merger Sub Inc. and K2 Merger Sub 2 LLC, were established in Nevada on January 21st. This suggests Musk is keeping all options open.
Each potential merger has distinct advantages. Combining SpaceX with xAI could potentially allow xAI to locate its data centers in space, an ambition Musk has previously expressed. A SpaceX-Tesla merger might integrate the electric vehicle maker's energy storage business with the concept of data centers in space.
These options—along with the possibility of merging all three companies—align with Musk's stated comments and recent actions to consolidate or at least share resources between his ventures. Last year, SpaceX agreed to invest $2 billion in xAI, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. Earlier this week, Tesla (also led by Musk) revealed it had also invested $2 billion in the AI startup.
Last year, xAI acquired X. Musk stated this transaction valued xAI at $80 billion, while X was valued at $33 billion. SpaceX, founded in 2002, reportedly conducted a secondary share sale that valued the company at $800 billion, making it the most valuable private company in the United States.
