Google's "Ambient Coding" Tool Opal Now Available on Gemini Platform

2025-12-18

Google's ambient coding tool, Opal, is now coming to Gemini. The company announced on Wednesday that it is integrating the tool directly into the Gemini web application, enabling users to create their own customized apps, which Google refers to as "Gems."

Gems, first introduced in 2024, are specialized versions of Gemini tailored for specific tasks or use cases. Examples of pre-built Gems from Google include a learning coach, brainstorming assistant, career advisor, coding partner, and writing editor.

Opal, on the other hand, focuses on helping users build mini-applications or combine existing ones. By simply describing their desired app in natural language, users can leverage multiple Gemini AI models through Opal to automatically generate the application.

Now accessible directly via the Gemini website, Opal can be found within the Gems manager. It features a visual editor that outlines the steps required to build an app. Users can rearrange these steps and connect them using the interface—no coding required.

Notably, Google has added a new view inside Gemini powered by this editor, capable of transforming written prompts into structured step-by-step workflows. This enhancement simplifies both app creation and understanding how they function behind the scenes.

For more advanced customization, users have the option to switch to the professional-grade editor at opal.google.com. Once created, these small applications can be saved and reused across projects.

"Ambient coding," a term describing the trend of using AI to automate programming and app development, has surged in popularity over recent years. The space now includes startups like Lovable and Cursor, offerings from major AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI, and consumer-focused tools like those developed by AI-powered app startup Wabi.

The Gemini web app is available at gemini.google.com.
