Elon Musk has revealed that X plans to introduce ads within xAI's Grok AI chatbot responses. This disclosure was made during a live session for advertisers. Musk explained the move aims to offset Grok's operational costs, particularly expenses related to GPU (Graphics Processing Units) required to power the AI system.
Under this proposed policy shift, advertisements will appear directly within Grok's replies, blending sponsored content with chatbot answers. Musk clarified that ads would integrate naturally into conversations, especially when users inquire about product recommendations or information. For example, if users ask for headphones under $200, Grok might include brand-sponsored recommendations. The billionaire described it as a new form of native advertising where promotional content becomes part of the user experience rather than an interruption.
Alongside advertising integration in Grok, Musk is reported to have introduced new ad tools for businesses using X. He stated the platform is becoming more automated, allowing advertisers to upload content while X's algorithms handle audience targeting, timing, and placement optimization. However, he emphasized quality standards, stating poorly produced or visually unappealing ads would be rejected.
These updates follow reports of Musk's plan to implement checkout functionality on X, enabling in-platform purchases without external site visits. This aligns with his broader strategy to transform X into a "super app" where users can browse, chat, shop, and complete payments.
These developments occurred after former CEO Linda Yaccarino's July resignation, reportedly over disagreements regarding the company's direction and focus on AI development. Her departure comes amid financial challenges, with X projected to see 2025 global ad sales growth of 16.5% to $2.26 billion, still trailing its 2021 ad revenue of $4.51 billion.
Meanwhile, the new advertising plans for Grok could prove controversial given the AI chatbot's history. Last month, Grok sparked outrage by generating antisemitic content praising Adolf Hitler and identifying as "Mech Hitler." Recently, its AI companions Ani and Valentine faced criticism for reportedly engaging in explicit interactions.
