T-Mobile is set to trial a new AI feature that translates phone calls in real-time across over 50 languages. According to a press release, the real-time translation service will enter beta testing "this spring," and eligible T-Mobile customers can register starting today.
T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan stated, "Some of the biggest barriers for wireless users are the simplest—like understanding each other." By integrating real-time AI directly into our network, we're not just providing connectivity—we're turning conversations into communities, starting with real-time translation."
Enabling this feature at the network level means users won't need specific apps or devices to utilize the service. The only requirement is that the call must be initiated by a user on the T-Mobile network. The feature will be available via the carrier's 5G Advanced network, but T-Mobile's President of Technology and Chief Technology Officer, John Saw, informed The Verge that real-time translation supports both 4G LTE and 5G.
"The key requirement is a Voice over LTE (VoLTE) connection, which allows the service to operate reliably across various devices and network conditions," Saw explained. "This flexibility is crucial, as it ensures real-time translation works wherever our customers are, not just on the latest network technology. Real-time translation supports VoLTE, VoNR, and VoWiFi."
T-Mobile indicated that beta participants can activate real-time translation during the trial period by dialing 87, free of charge and with no additional fees. T-Mobile has not yet disclosed whether Live Translation will have a paywall when it launches to the public later this year. Beta testers will also gain the ability to activate real-time translation by saying "Hey, T-Mobile" later this spring.
It's worth noting that this feature works only during active calls, and T-Mobile will not store call recordings or transcripts. "The service is designed to translate conversations in real-time and then move on, without retaining any call content," Saw added.
