xAI Introduces "Memory" Feature to Grok

2025-04-17

Elon Musk's AI firm, xAI, is steadily enhancing the capabilities of its Grok chatbot to match leading competitors such as ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

On Wednesday evening, xAI announced the launch of a "memory" feature for Grok, enabling the bot to recall details from previous conversations. Now, when you ask Grok for advice, it can deliver more personalized responses—provided you've used it enough times for it to "learn" your preferences.

ChatGPT has long included a similar memory feature and recently upgraded to reference users' entire chat history. Similarly, Gemini also uses persistent memory to tailor its responses to individuals.

"Memory is transparent," wrote the official Grok account in a post on X. "You can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget."

Grok's new memory feature is now available in beta on Grok.com and the Grok iOS and Android apps—but not for users in the EU or UK. This feature can be turned off via the data control page in the settings menu, and individual "memories" can be deleted by clicking an icon below the web chat interface (and soon on Android).

xAI stated that efforts are underway to bring the memory functionality to the Grok experience on X.
