Google is bringing generative AI directly to your smartphone.
In late May 2025, the tech giant launched AI Edge Gallery, an Android application that allows users to download and run AI models directly on their devices without cloud connectivity. While currently available only to Android users, Google plans to extend this app to iOS users in the near future.
According to the GitHub repository for Google's AI Edge Gallery: "The Google AI Edge Gallery is an experimental application that puts the power of cutting-edge generative AI models right in your hands."
Key Features to Know
The currently available Google AI Edge Gallery includes several key components that help users maximize their on-device AI experience. Some of the most useful features are:
- AI Chat: The typical AI chatbot experience that most of us are already familiar with.
- Ask Image: Upload a digital image and ask the AI specific questions about it.
- Prompt Lab: Experiment with various single-turn LLM interactions or generate, rewrite, and summarize code using free-form prompts.
These three features can be accessed from the main screen of Google AI Edge Gallery. After selecting one, you will be prompted to choose from compatible AI models. If the AI model isn't already on your smartphone, you'll have the option to download and install it.
Exploring Available AI Models
Google AI Edge Gallery currently hosts 18 AI models. As smartphone performance improves, more AI model developers are embracing mobile platforms, which is expected to increase this number.
Unsurprisingly, most of the AI models in Google AI Edge Gallery are developed by various teams within Google; however, other models are also available, including some from industry giants like Microsoft and lesser-known brands.
- Google: MedGemma-27B, Gemma3-1B, Gemma3-27B, Gemma3-12B, Gemma3-4B, Gemma2-2B, MediaPipe, Gecko-110m
- Microsoft: Phi-4-mini
- Depth Search Technology: Depth Search-R1
- Alibaba Cloud: Qwen2.5-0.5B, Qwen 2.5-3B, Qwen 2.5-1.5B

Paving the Way for Mobile AI
While the concept of on-device AI is not entirely new, it remains relatively rare among modern AI models.
Most consumer phones lack the processing power to run some of the larger and more complex models, as evidenced by the limited options in Google’s AI Edge Gallery. However, this market represents an important step in bridging the gap between smartphones and AI.
