Musk Restarts Tesla Dojo 3 Supercomputer

2026-01-19

On January 19th, it was reported that earlier today, Elon Musk announced on the X platform that with the completion of the AI5 chip design, Tesla will restart the development of its supercomputer project, Dojo 3.

In the same post, Musk also issued a "recruitment notice," inviting applicants "interested in participating in the development of the world's highest-yield chip" to introduce themselves via email by outlining, in three key points, the most challenging technical problems they have solved.

In August 2025, reports emerged that Tesla had completely halted the Dojo supercomputer project, with its lead also set to depart. This decision signified Tesla's official abandonment of plans to develop in-house chips necessary for autonomous driving. Insiders revealed that Musk personally ordered the shutdown of the project.

At the time, Musk responded to a user's comment, stating that it made no sense for Tesla to disperse resources by concurrently developing two entirely different AI chip designs. He noted that Tesla's AI5, AI6, and subsequent chips would excel in inference and be at least quite good in training, and that all efforts would be concentrated on these chips.
