OpenAI Grants ChatGPT Access to Cloud-Based Documents and Third-Party Research Tools

2025-06-06

A new day brings fresh updates as OpenAI's ChatGPT introduces a series of enhanced functionalities primarily designed for business users. These include integrations with cloud services like Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and SharePoint.

Moreover, OpenAI has announced that its AI chatbot can now record and transcribe business meetings while also supporting the Model Context Protocol. This protocol allows ChatGPT to utilize external tools for more comprehensive research.

The release of these features follows just one day after OpenAI unveiled several new capabilities for developers, including advanced features in ChatGPT's Codex coding tool. The Codex tool is capable of generating new code or editing existing code from natural language prompts.

Today, OpenAI emphasized its focus on making ChatGPT more suitable for office workers rather than developers. The updated integrations enable users to search for information across some of the most widely used cloud platforms. For instance, financial analysts can now ask ChatGPT to access company financial reports and accounting files stored in Dropbox to answer their queries. Similarly, marketing professionals might use it to generate insights based on product presentations stored in Box or Google Drive.

OpenAI stated that these integrations will comply with organizational access control policies, ensuring that users only receive insights or answers from documents and files they are authorized to access.

The second update grants ChatGPT the ability to record and transcribe meetings. The chatbot will be able to produce timestamped meeting notes, allowing users to review specific discussions. It can also suggest actions based on the meeting’s content by accurately understanding what was discussed.

This functionality works seamlessly with the new integrations. Users can query their meeting notes, and ChatGPT will be able to retrieve any relevant information stored in Box or other supported services to provide further insights. Additionally, users can convert action items into Canvas documents, OpenAI's tool for coding and writing projects.

With these new features, OpenAI is set to compete with companies like Zoom Video Communications, ClickUp, and Notion Labs, which offer similar AI-driven transcription and meeting summarization tools.

The final update involves enhancing ChatGPT’s research capabilities through a new interface introduced in February. This interface allows users to generate detailed reports on specific topics. It represents an autonomous AI capability where ChatGPT can conduct research using only an initial prompt without requiring user input or guidance.

The new integration employs the MCP protocol, offering a standardized method for AI agents to use third-party tools. Previously, ChatGPT could only use a web browser for research, but OpenAI stated that it can now leverage selected tools from Google LLC, Microsoft Corp., HubSpot, and Linear to assist in its research tasks.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise subscribers can also use the MCP to connect to additional research tools.

Today’s updates indicate that OpenAI is intensifying its efforts to encourage businesses to adopt ChatGPT across more use cases. Given its current impact, there is good reason to believe it will succeed in this endeavor. The company reported today that its enterprise product has over 3 million subscribers, up from the 2 million reported by COO Brad Lightcap in February.
