Google AI Mode Now Supports Voice Conversation
Google has introduced a groundbreaking voice interaction feature for its experimental AI search mode, enabling users to engage in dynamic conversational exchanges. This innovative capability allows users to pose complex multi-step inquiries and receive real-time integrated responses through a seamless voice interface that surfaces web-linked information.
The functionality becomes accessible by opening the Google app and activating the new "Live Search" icon. Users will then experience AI-generated audio responses while maintaining the ability to continue their conversations with follow-up questions. This announcement follows the recent global rollout of AI Mode to all U.S. users, positioning Google as a direct competitor to services like Perplexity AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT voice features.
Liza Ma, Director of Product Management for Google Search, emphasizes the practical applications: "Whether you're multitasking or on the move, this tool proves invaluable. For instance, when packing for a trip, you could ask 'What are effective ways to prevent linen dresses from wrinkling in suitcases?' and subsequently follow up with 'If wrinkles still occur, what solutions exist?'"
The system maintains active background processing, allowing uninterrupted interactions with other apps. Users can access text transcriptions through the "Transcribe" option and revisit conversation history via the AI Mode archive. Technically, the feature employs a customized Gemini model with advanced voice capabilities, built upon Google's core search quality systems to ensure reliable results.
Looking ahead, Google plans to expand this functionality with camera-based contextual queries as demonstrated at the May I/O Developer Conference. The integration of query expansion technology further enhances results by delivering more diverse and comprehensive web content discovery opportunities.
