Google Photos Introduces New AI Feature: Remix Photos into Multiple Styles, Image-to-Video Conversion

2025-07-24

Google recently unveiled a suite of new AI-powered capabilities for its Google Photos app. The updates introduce creative tools that transform static images into dynamic video clips and allow photo "remixing" in various artistic styles including anime, comic book, sketch, and 3D animation. A new "Create" tab will be added to the app interface, serving as a centralized hub for both AI-driven and traditional creative tools. This section will house the two primary new features alongside existing options like collage creation and highlight reels. The implementation represents a significant expansion of AI accessibility for Google's 1.5+ billion active users - many of whom may not have previously engaged with AI technologies. The company has designed this approach to simultaneously gather valuable feedback from a massive user base while demonstrating AI capabilities. Both new features will operate in experimental mode requiring user feedback through upvotes/downvotes on generated outputs. These responses will directly inform product refinement and user experience improvements. The video transformation tool leverages Google's Veo 2 model to generate six-second clips from selected photos. Users can choose from two prompting options: "Subtle Motion" for natural transitions or "I'm Feeling Lucky" for more dramatic effects. This feature becomes available for U.S. Android and iOS users today. For the remix function, powered by Google's Imagen AI model, users can convert any photo from their library into alternative artistic interpretations within seconds. This capability will roll out to U.S. mobile users in the coming weeks. All AI-generated content will include SynthID digital watermarks for traceability. Video outputs will also display visible watermarks following Gemini's standard format. The Create tab itself is scheduled to launch in the U.S. market in August. These updates align with broader Google AI strategy as YouTube Shorts now offers parallel video creation tools and Veo 2-powered effects. YouTube will later integrate Veo 3 capabilities during the summer season, according to Google's roadmap.
