Elon Musk's xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin announced his departure from the company via X on Wednesday. Leading the engineering team since its inception, Babuschkin helped the startup become one of Silicon Valley's leading AI model developers within several years.
Babuschkin posted: "Today marks my last day at xAI - the company I co-founded with Elon Musk in 2023. I vividly remember our first meeting where we discussed AI and potential future developments for hours. We both believed there was a need for a new AI company with a distinct mission."
The former xAI executive will launch his own venture capital firm "Babuschkin Ventures" focused on AI safety research and supporting startups "dedicated to advancing human progress and unraveling cosmic mysteries." This decision followed an inspiring dinner conversation with Future of Life Institute founder Max Tegmark about building safe AI systems, as well as personal motivation driven by his parents' immigration journey from Russia to the US for better opportunities.
Babuschkin's exit occurs after months of turmoil for xAI involving multiple controversies surrounding its Grok chatbot. Incidents included the AI quoting Musk's personal views on sensitive topics, generating inappropriate content with extremist references, and recently launching a feature allowing users to create AI-generated videos of celebrities like Taylor Swift in compromising situations.
While these incidents overshadowed xAI's technical achievements - with its models demonstrating state-of-the-art performance against competitors like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic - the company maintains a strong development history. Before co-founding xAI, Babuschkin contributed to Google DeepMind's AlphaStar AI system that mastered StarCraft gameplay in 2019 and previously served as a researcher at OpenAI.
In his farewell message, Babuschkin shared challenges faced during xAI's formation, noting industry skepticism about building a supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee within three months. The company achieved this milestone despite environmental concerns about temporary gas turbines powering the computing cluster.
Reflecting on his experience, Babuschkin expressed pride in xAI's growth, comparing his departure to "a proud parent leaving after dropping their child off at college." He emphasized two key lessons from working with Musk: "1) Fearlessly roll up your sleeves to tackle technical problems personally, 2) Maintain a sense of urgent intensity in execution."
