Threads is launching an AI-powered feature that enables users to personalize their feeds. The social network owned by Meta announced this on Wednesday. The platform's new "Dear Algo" function allows users to inform Threads about specific content they wish to see more or less of in their feed.
To use the feature, users need to type "Dear Algo" in a public Threads post, followed by their request for more or less of a particular type of content. For instance, if you want to see more content about popular podcasts, you could post, "Dear Algo, show me more posts about podcasts." After submitting the request, your feed will be adjusted within three days.
It's noteworthy that because Dear Algo operates through public posts, others can see your requests. They can even share your request to apply it to their own feeds. This aspect of the feature might be a barrier for some users who may not want their requests to be public. However, Meta views this as a way for users to discover new conversations and topics, turning personalization into a community experience.
By allowing users to temporarily influence the content appearing in their feed, Threads gains an edge over competitors by offering a capability not available on other platforms.
"Threads is where you go to find out what's happening now," the company wrote in a blog post. "But sometimes, what matters to you can change in an instant, and you want your Threads feed to reflect that—whether it's wanting to see more posts during a live NBA game or wanting to see less about a TV show you haven't caught up on yet."
Although Threads and its rivals X and Bluesky already provide users with simple ways to indicate their preferences, such as an "uninterested" button, the new Dear Algo feature takes personalization to a new level. This functionality can also help Threads feel more real-time, a characteristic historically associated with X.
Dear Algo is currently available in the US, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK. Threads plans to introduce it to more countries in the future.
The launch of the new feature comes weeks after a report from market intelligence firm Similarweb indicated that Threads now surpasses X in daily mobile usage. While X still dominates on the web, Threads' iOS and Android mobile apps have continued to see growth in daily active users over the past few months.
The report shows that as of January 7, 2026, Threads has 141.5 million daily active users on mobile, compared to X's 125 million.
