Google Launches AI-Powered Business Call Feature Gemini 2.5 Pro Introduces AI Mode
Google Unveils AI-Powered Business Call Feature and Enhanced Search Capabilities for U.S. Users
Google is rolling out an AI-driven business calling feature to all U.S. users that automates interactions with local businesses to obtain pricing and availability information. The tech giant also introduced Gemini 2.5 Pro model integration into search experiences alongside new deep research capabilities for its AI-powered search features.
The business calling functionality uses artificial intelligence to make automated calls to local service providers on users' behalf. Designed to eliminate the need for direct human-to-human conversations, this feature handles time-sensitive inquiries about service details and cost structures. Google initially began testing this capability in January through its opt-in Search Labs program for select users.
To activate the feature, users should perform searches like "pet groomers near me." A new "Let AI Check Prices" option will appear in search results. Users then complete a brief questionnaire about their specific needs - including pet type, requested services, and preferred scheduling times - to receive customized service offerings from multiple local providers.
According to a Google spokesperson in a statement to TechCrunch, automated calls include clear disclosures that they originate from Google's AI system. This addresses previous consumer concerns raised several years ago when similar business calling features led to complaints about misleading human interactions. Google subsequently implemented voice announcements clarifying AI-generated calls.
The enhanced business calling feature is now available to all U.S. search users, with increased usage limits for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. For these premium accounts, Google has integrated the Gemini 2.5 Pro model into its AI capabilities, allowing users to ask complex multi-part questions through the AI interface. The company highlighted superior performance in advanced reasoning, mathematical calculations, and code generation tasks. Subscribers can select the 2.5 Pro model via a dropdown menu in the AI mode interface.
The newly introduced "Deep Search" functionality in AI mode automatically conducts hundreds of information searches, synthesizes findings, and generates comprehensive cited reports within minutes - saving hours of manual research time. Google positions this feature as valuable for work-related projects, personal hobbies, academic research, and major life decisions like property purchases or financial planning.
Since its initial launch earlier this year, Google has consistently expanded AI mode capabilities to compete with emerging services like Perplexity AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT Search. Recent additions include voice interaction features launched last month and AI-driven shopping experiences introduced in May, which provide product visualizations and data-driven purchasing guidance.
