OpenAI Establishes Nonprofit Advisory Board to Support Charitable Causes

2025-04-16

OpenAI has unveiled a new non-profit advisory board and named four members: Dolores Huerta, Monica Lozano, Dr. Robert K. Ross, and Jack Oliver. This council will provide guidance and support for OpenAI’s charitable initiatives.

Dolores Huerta is a renowned labor activist from the 20th century. Monica Lozano previously served as the president and CEO of College Futures Foundation and was also a member of Apple's board of directors. Dr. Robert K. Ross spent years leading the California Endowment, a health and welfare foundation, while Jack Oliver is noted as an influential figure across government, technology, business, and advocacy sectors.

The launch of this advisory committee comes several months after OpenAI transitioned into a for-profit entity. Some former OpenAI employees expressed opposition to this change in a draft amicus brief, supporting Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the company for allegedly straying from its original mission to benefit humanity. Additionally, a coalition of nonprofit, labor, and philanthropic leaders has urged California Attorney General Rob Bonta to investigate OpenAI’s shift in status.

In its announcement, OpenAI reaffirmed that the non-profit arm would continue to operate. The advisory board is expected to play a pivotal role in expanding its influence. Its mission includes ensuring that OpenAI’s non-profit division serves as a catalyst for community-focused and mission-driven organizations tackling pressing global issues such as healthcare, education, public services, and scientific discovery.
