Perhaps you don't need an AI smart ring for managing your to-do list. Doist, the developer behind the popular multi-device task management app Todoist, has launched a new AI-powered "voice-to-task" feature: Todoist Ramble. This feature enables you to describe your tasks using natural language.
As the name suggests, Ramble can transform your unstructured, rambling speech into organized tasks. The app also captures additional details you mention, such as project deadlines, priority levels, durations, and assignees.
The core idea is that people often think of tasks while on the go, but pulling out a phone to type notes or set reminders can be cumbersome. With Todoist Ramble, you still need to take out your phone, but typing is unnecessary. You simply tap the Ramble icon and start speaking. The app updates task information in real-time and can even process edits and changes while you're still talking.
For instance, the company notes you can say commands like "Actually, change that to Thursday" or "That's all" to guide the AI further during your speech.
Ramble is built on a large language model (LLM) and is part of a suite of AI features the company calls Todoist Assist. It leverages Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash Live model via Vertex AI for real-time speech understanding. As the audio streams to the backend, the model transcribes your speech, identifies the tasks, dates, and other details you mention, and subsequently generates the tasks.
Doist states that audio is neither stored nor used for AI training, and the application has achieved SOC2 Type II certification.
This AI functionality is similar to what we see on various hardware AI devices, which transcribe speech into notes, reminders, to-dos, or insights. For example, Amazon's Bee wearable uses AI to take notes and suggest tasks, while other devices, like those from Plaud, can record meeting notes and highlight key points.
There's also growing interest in AI-powered smart rings, such as the Stream ring from startup Sandbar or the upcoming Index 01 ring from Pebble. Both allow you to quickly press the ring (worn on the index finger) to add to-dos or take notes within a phone app.
Prior to launch, Ramble was tested among all Todoist Experimental users—a group of approximately 150,000 active testers who try new features early. In the first three weeks of testing, about 76,000 testers completed roughly 290,000 Ramble sessions across desktop and mobile. The feature then entered a public beta phase in November.
The success rate for task creation improved from around 40% in October last year to approximately 62% by December, a progression Doist credits for driving upgrades. New users engaging with Ramble upgrade at a rate about five times higher than before, the company reports.
Todoist Ramble is now available to all users starting today, across iOS, Android, desktop, and web, supporting 38 languages. Users on the Beginner plan can also access the feature, albeit with a limited number of monthly sessions. The Pro and Business paid plans offer unlimited sessions. For easy access, it's available via home screen or lock screen shortcuts on iOS, and through app shortcuts, widgets, and quick settings tiles on Android.
